How to find an EMDR therapist?

You’re reading this because you’re likely wondering how to learn more about EMDR and how to find a therapist who uses EMDR in Salt Lake City. Thankfully, you’ve come to the right place (for a brief overview of what EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is check out this post).

Once you’ve decided that you would like to speak with a therapist who does EMDR to determine if it may be a good fit for you, you may be wondering “where do I even start?

While many therapists claim to use EMDR in their approach to therapy, not all EMDR therapists are alike. There are countless different EMDR trainings, curriculums, and teachers, though not all are considered to be at the standards of clinical excellence.

But there’s good news.

The EMDR International Association (aka EMDRIA) is the most reputable EMDR association for training therapists and publishing research. Finding a therapist who has been trained under an EMDRIA training is the most likely way to find a therapist who is using EMDR to the highest clinical standards.

Some questions that may be beneficial to ask a potential therapist are:

  • What organization did your EMDR training? Are the EMDRIA-approved?

  • Where in your EMDR training are you at?

  • How do you utilize the 8-phase model in practice?

  • How much preparation do you provide for clients before beginning the processing phases?

I understand all of that may not make sense but, luckily for you, I am a therapist in Salt Lake City, Utah who was trained in an EMDRIA-approved training. I am more than happy to explain all of those questions — and my answers — to you. Let’s set up a free consultation to start to determine the best treatment plan for you.
